Aims and scope

Future Integrative Medicine (FIM) is the official scientific journal of Capital Medical University. It promotes future innovation in medicine by actively integrating the best of traditional wisdom and modern scientific advancement. FIM publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed original research articles, reviews, opinions, commentaries, case reports, study protocols, and letters covering a wide range of topics that integrate conventional medicine with traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine, as well as nutrition- and food-based approaches to health and disease.  

FIM particularly welcomes research on functional foods, nutraceuticals, and medicine-food homology (MFH; Yaoshi Tongyuan) that bridges traditional dietary wisdom with modern evidence-based medicine. This includes functional foods, medicinal and edible resources, functional ingredients, traditional dietary therapies, and their applications in disease prevention, health promotion, personalized medicine, and integrative care.  

FIM recognizes that the modernization and future development of traditional and integrative medicine rely on the rigorous application of modern medical science and cutting-edge biomedical technologies. The journal therefore welcomes studies applying advanced techniques, including molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, advanced imaging, and systems biology, to investigate the efficacy, safety, mechanisms, and clinical translation of traditional, nutritional, and food-based interventions. Topics of special interest include:  

  • Application of modern medical diagnostics and therapeutics within integrative medicine frameworks.
  • Evidence-based studies of traditional Chinese medicine, other traditional and complementary therapies, dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, functional foods, and other non-drug interventions.
  • Medicine-food homology, including functional foods, medicinal and edible resources, functional ingredients, and traditional dietary therapies.
  • Mechanistic, clinical, epidemiological, and translational studies of food-derived bioactive compounds and food-based interventions for disease prevention and management.
  • Diet–microbiota interactions, gut microbiome, precision nutrition, and related approaches relevant to integrative medicine and human health.
  • Efficacy- and safety-guided biomarker research employing advanced analytical techniques.
  • Pharmacological characterization, safety evaluation, standardization, and quality control of bioactive substances and natural products.
  • Molecular mechanism studies. Computational and in silico studies should be supported by appropriate experimental or clinical validation when making mechanistic or therapeutic claims.
